Maywood Maple Sugaring - 4th Grade
This popular program is available to all 4th graders in March. The program offers students a hands-on look at every stage of the maple sugar process from photosynthesis, to tapping, to collecting and boiling the sap! Students also get the chance to taste real maple syrup on pancakes! March only!!
2 Hours, 55 Students Max

Winter Adaptions - K-12th Grade
By examining various animal mounts and skins, students will learn various animal adaptations to winter. Then, on a wintery hike, we will examine snow depth, temperature, wind and microclimates as we search for animal signs. For older students, we learn common animal tracks and signs, and the stories tracks tell us. Students will examine WDNR Winter Severity Indexes, and winter's impact on animal populations.
2 Hours, Class size variable

Habitat Hikes - PreK - 1st Grade
Students use their senses at various stations to discover the layers of a forest and who lives there. Learn why the forest is an important habitat for so many critters. Older student hikes will compare the forest to a pond, determining how they are alike and different. For 6th grade and older, hikes include topics such as adaptations, whitetail deer ecology, birds of the forest and forest ecology. Please tell the Naturalist hike topics you are interested in.
2 Hours, Smaller group sizes work best

River Investigations - 8th-12th Grade
With the Pigeon River at our doorstep, Maywood offers high school students a hands-on opportunity to learn about water resources and testing skills. Students investigate various aspects of the river: dissolved O2 content, pH levels, nitrate levels, and biotic indicators. Students then hypothesize about the overall health of the river, possible human impacts, and finally role play some management plans for the Pigeon River. A great lesson that can easily flow back into the classroom!
2 Hours, 30 Students max

* Wild about Weather - 1st Grade
Students first examine clouds at Maywood and how they got there. We then play a water cycle game and learn about water vocabulary. After looking at Maywood's weather station, we'll hike outside to see how weather affects nature!
2 Hours, Class size variable

* Can you dig it? Maywood Soils - 2nd-8th Grades
Students will examine Wisconsin's unique soils and how glaciers helped to form them. We will look at soil horizons, how certain soil types create different habitats, and examine soil samples back in our lab. April-May.
2 Hours, 35 Students max

* Aquatic Ecology - 3rd-8th Grade
Students collect and identify aquatic insects, frogs, and other critters from the Pigeon River. We'll build our own food web as we discuss the interdependence of life in the river. Time allowing, we can compare life in the river to life in the pond.
2 Hours, 35 Students

* Land & Water - 4th-8th Grade
This tour shows students how water helped shape Maywood's landscape and how humans affect the quality of water here at Maywood. Students gather data on stream parameters, landforms, and aquatic life and hypothesize on ways to minimize environmental impacts in their hometown.
2 Hours, 35 Students

*Silly for Seeds (Plant Development) - 3rd-5th Grade
After collecting and identifying various seeds around Maywood, students examine seed adaptations under our microscopes. Students can play the pollination game or build a seed of their very own! This lesson can be taught all year or WARM MONTHS ONLY if plant/flower parts are included.
2 Hours, 35 Students

Scutes, Skins & Shells - K-6th Grade
Students learn about our cold-blooded friends, their adaptations and importance in the environment. After a visit with Maywood's live snake, turtle, and salamanders, we'll investigate habitats where reptiles are found in the park, weather permitting. April - May
1 hour, Class size variable

Eco Adventure Course - 5th-9th Grade
This low-ropes challenge course of 10 medium-difficulty stations requires small groups of 10 students to solve challenges as a team while developing an understanding of environmental issues. Students rely on each other for ideas and support, rather than individual athletic achievement. This confidence-building activity teaches kids about themselves, their classmates and the world around them.
